A Review and Synthesis of Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Urban Logistics

Problem Statement: The fast-growing demand for online shopping and home delivery has increased the volume of delivery vehicles on roadways, contributing to congestion, crashes and injuries, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, how curbside access is managed has not been modified accordingly, creating confusion, challenges, and conflicts among delivery vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, ridehailing vehicles and riders, transit riders, and residents and businesses who rely on on-street parking.

Project Description: This project will synthesize the effectiveness of innovative solutions for sustainable urban logistics with a focus on (1) right-sized delivery vehicles and their efficient deployment with existing fleets (e.g., pedal-assisted electric cargo bikes), (2) micro-fulfillment centers within city boundaries, and (3) access to and use of curbside space. To achieve this, the project team will: (1) critically examine the recent academic literature, (2) summarize recent and ongoing pilot programs, and (3) assess planning and policy documents of government agencies in California.
