Project Summary

“The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has recently implemented an ambitious Innovative Clean Transit (ICT) regulation that requires all public transit agencies to gradually transition to a 100 percent zero emission bus (ZEB) fleet. Beginning in 2029, 100% of new purchases by transit agencies must be ZEBs, with a goal for a full transition by 2040. Adoption of these new types of battery or fuel cell buses by California transit fleets that traditionally have used diesel, diesel-hybrid, biofuels, compressed natural gas, and liquefied natural gas represents a marked departure from past practices.

Many transit agencies in the state are already deploying battery and fuel cell electric buses, and have considerable experience to share with other agencies. However, there are extensive knowledge gaps and needs for additional information for transit agencies, especially with regard to the installation and operation of support infrastructure.

The goal of this project is to develop a transit agency focused and web-based information tool called “ZEB Info” for guiding agencies through the process of implementing battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell-electric solutions for transit bus applications. There is a pressing need for this information with the recent implementation of the ARB ICT regulation.
