Project Summary

The Advanced Clean Trucks and Advanced Clean Fleets regulations are designed to expedite the shift to zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, with a particular focus on fleet vehicles crucial for meeting the 2045 carbon neutrality goal. Recent studies reveal that cost parity has not yet been reached for most of these vehicles, and the timeline for achieving cost parity varies considerably based on the specific type of medium or heavy-duty vehicle and its intended use. Several key factors influence the total cost of ownership of these vehicles, including vehicle prices, fuel or electricity costs, efficiency, miles driven, and the expenses associated with charging infrastructure.

This project will examine how the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) contributes to enhancing the cost competitiveness of zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles while encouraging fleet electrification. The researchers will consider the LCFS’s impact on alternative fuels, such as biofuels, and assess the cost advantages of investing in charging infrastructure, whether or not there is an on-site energy production facility. Additionally, the project will explore the consequences of proposed modifications to the LCFS regulation, such as transitioning from credits to the fractional displacement method of credit allocation, on the revenue generated for fleets.
