Project Summary
Residential charging load is the least understood component of electric vehicle (EVs) usage impacts because most households with EVs do not have separate meters measuring EV consumption. This project combined electricity meter data with electric vehicle data to estimate the impact of EV adoption on the level and profile of residential electricity consumption and the reliability of electricity service. The project found that by looking at hourly electricity consumption of households on special EV rate with no separate meter for EV charging show a clear and distinct charging behavior, and that their charging behavior differs from households with a dedicated meter. The project also found that more data is needed to estimate EV charging behavior for households that do not have a dedicated meter for EV charging and/or have not switched to an EV rate, which comprises the overwhelming majority of households with EVs.
