Project Summary
This study examines how transportation subsidies affect travel behavior among low-income individuals across different neighborhood types in Los Angeles County. Building on promising results from Phase I of LA Metro’s Mobility Wallet program, we will analyze how $1,800 in transportation subsidies distributed to 2,000 participants influences travel outcomes between urban and suburban residents. Using the Daynamica mobile app, we will collect observed travel behavior data from 500 research participants, in treatment and control groups, over a 7-day period. The study focuses on three key outcomes: trip frequency, activity space size, and modal diversity. By relying on observed travel behavior data, we can create accurate estimates of travel for low-income individuals across urban and suburban areas of Los Angeles County. Our models will estimate how the Mobility Wallet and residential location affect travel outcomes while controlling for socioeconomic factors. Findings will provide insights for transportation agencies considering subsidy programs and contribute to addressing transportation equity challenges in low-income populations in different neighborhood types.
