Project Summary
Bikeshare systems play a crucial role in improving access to affordable and environmentally friendly mobility options. In collaboration with the nonprofit organization Santa Ana Active Streets, this research will be conducted to generate a community-tailored bikeshare model. This project will follow a co-design process to formulate a community-led bicycle lending library in Santa Ana, California with data collected through workshops and stated preference surveys. Data will be analyzed using a hybrid choice model to address this community-identified transportation need and several of California’s research priorities, including barriers to increasing active transportation usage among different groups, how policy and infrastructure changes can address these disparities, and how active transportation investments impact access. The outcomes of this research will contribute to accessible sustainable transportation solutions, community ownership over local mobility options, and methodological advancements for participatory planning processes. This study will culminate in a framework for the collaborative, data-driven development of community-based bikeshare systems that could be followed in similar urban environments. Findings will be summarized in a two-page policy brief and shared with the City of Santa Ana, Santa Ana College, and Santa Ana Public Library with recommendations regarding the implementation of a community-tailored bikeshare system.
